Searching for the paranormal

The Spirit Hunter and The Skeptic
A Special Halloween Presentation Featuring Sandy Arno Lyons and Robert Elmouchi

Baldwin Public Library (Birmingham) 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10
Southfield Public Library 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12

Do you believe in ghosts or are you a hard core skeptic? Join author Sandy Arno Lyons and paranormal investigator Robert Elmouchi for a spooky evening of ghostly tales and a scientific look at the paranormal. Sandy will talk about her search for places in Michigan that are known to be haunted and Robert will talk about how a scientific investigation of the paranormal could change our understanding of nature and lead to new technologies.
Sandy Arno Lyons, author of Michigan's Most Haunted, A Ghostly Guide to the Great Lakes State, will talk about her search for haunted places in Michigan that are also accessible to the public. This was an important detail as Sandy wanted readers to be able to experience these places for themselves if they so desire.
After some serious snooping, Sandy was able to interview patrons, employees and owners of various Michigan hotels, restaurants and bars to get first-hand accounts of unexplained phenomenon.
Sandy will speak about her book, Michigan's Most Haunted, A Ghostly Guide to the Great Lakes State, which features more than 25 true tales from eight properties along with history, pictures and contact information. Sandy will share tales that are not embellished, but still make your skin crawl and hair stand on end.
Robert Elmouchi, scientist and founder of Paranormal Investigators Group, will be presenting his speech Why We Should Investigate the Paranormal. He will talk about how superstitions, mythologies and beliefs in the paranormal have evolved over centuries into bona fide fields of scientific research.
Alleged paranormal phenomena continue to be reported in modern times. Although most are actually the result of misperception or an overactive imagination, some mysterious phenomena worthy of an investigation are happening right here in southeast Michigan.
Robert will explain how a real scientific investigation differs from what is shown on popular paranormal investigation television shows. He'll also discuss plans for an upcoming investigation and how members of the audience can participate.

"Patient Stories" book signing in South Lyon

Andrea King, author of the new book "Patient Stories: Coping with Life-Changing Illnesses," will host a book signing from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Tuscan Café, 101 S. Lafayette St., South Lyon.
Through a compilation of real-life examples, the book gives the true voice and encounters of people who have been diagnosed with various chronic diseases or illnesses, and what they do on a day-to-day basis to remain healthy.
King tackles the topic by giving a first-person narrative for each story that leaves the individuals tone of their experiences.
When Ralph Bear was diagnosed with leukemia he was told by an oncologist he would be dead by 65. He was also told there was nothing he could do to strengthen the odds.
More than 14 years later, Ralph has outlived his cancer diagnosis and went on to create the idea of Patient Stories to help others in need.
What started with one man's vision to keep himself on a healthy track ends with a journalist who has met with people around the country to hear--and share--what they have and continue to go through, as well as what their health and life means to them today.
From what began as the website http://www.patientstories.com has now evolved into Patient Stories.
To learn more about Patient Stories: Coping with Life-Changing Illnesses, or to contribute your own story, visit www.patientstories.com
